Hero Brown is a complex woman from the post-plague world of Y: The Last Man. In a world where all males but one died, women have had no choice but to recreate a workable society. Unfortunately, not all the choices have been wise.

Hero has been described as a traitor, a maniac, a cult member, a sister, a daughter, a slut, a coward, and a sheep. What she is, though, is a survivor: after being sexually abused by her grandfather as a child, promiscuous as a teen, and consistently disappointing her parents, Hero decided to finally do something she deemed useful and became a paramedic. A few moments before the plague hit, she was in the back of an ambulance with her firefighter boyfriend, dressing after a mid-day roll in the hay. As they dressed and stepped outside, he collapsed and died in her arms. It's safe to say that Hero never had much luck with men.

And now her younger brother Yorick is the only man left alive on the planet: she's the only woman left with a male family member and in many ways, she's still living in her brother's shadow. After the plague she survived the best way she knew how: by joining the Daughters of the Amazon, a radical group of women dedicated to destroying the memories of men worldwide. Like their namesakes, the Daughters of the Amazon cut off their left breasts as a sign of solidarity and support. A vulnerable Hero allowed herself to be brainwashed, became a reluctant killer for her group, and helped the Amazons track down Yorick. She herself tried to kill him on orders, but was unsuccessful. Eventually she was able to free herself from the Amazons and their grip, reuniting with her brother. After much explanation and discussion Yorick finally forgave her, sending her on a mission to a small town in California called Cooksfield to deliver a letter to a woman he'd met there named Beth.

Hero is about 5'7 with long medium-brown hair, average looks, and one breast. She has a gun and isn't afraid to use it... for the right reasons.
